Accessorizing Your Greenhouse
Greenhouses are not just static structures that stand empty. They have complex watering systems and are equipped with tools, furniture and the other accessories required to care for the plants inside. When accessorizing a greenhouse, you want to include tools and gardening implements, but the structure itself may also be adorned in dozens of ways.
Shutters, called louvers, allow air to flow into the greenhouse and are typically made of glass or plastic. They help ventilate the interior, a problem in areas where summer sunlight hours are long and hot. But, as with all things, they are not indestructible and must be replaced. But even when they don’t break, the greenhouse shopper may want to consider replacing them with auto-louvers, which allow opening and closing the shutters automatically. Some work on a timer, others are triggered by temperature.
You can install steel braces to enhance the foundation of your greenhouse. They act somewhat like a metal strap around a wooden barrel, giving it additional strength and supporting the structure. This can help prevent collapse during storms and even increase the support for the roof under heavy snow load.
Shelves have gone from static and boring to functioning works of art. You can find adjustable aluminum shelves that raise and lower. Still others are moveable so you can make the most of the space and make beautiful displays by moving the shelves into a variety of geometrical shapes. These shelves feature plastic liners, come on wheels and in many colors, and have even more options available.
And, if you want to make the most out of that rainwater, you can put a rainwater kit in your greenhouse. You can get small, single nozzles or entire tracks; some have misting attachments, movable heads and other gizmos. Some you can attach to a 24-hour/365-day digital controller.
There are heating devices in dozens of different styles. Some lamps or ‘toaster-coil’ types will spot heat a corner, while others, such as track systems, can be attached to the roof and heat the entire greenhouse in the winter.
There are many good books available online to help you build a greenhouse, maintain it, and grow many types of fabulous plants. It just takes a few clicks to find information on any subject and the tools to help you complete your task.
